A lost model is not a few hours of typing: it is a project, sometimes months of a practice's work. The question was never how fast the disk was — it was always how much work is at stake the day that disk stops.
A building model is not an office file: several people open it at once, it grows with every revision, and it has to answer in seconds. When the server drags, it isn't one workstation waiting, it's the whole practice.
9 TB are backed up continuously in our own data centre in Switzerland, models and revisions included. The office server carries an encryption certificate: nothing travels in the clear between the workstations and it. The network is segmented — a visitor on the meeting-room Wi-Fi has no route to the models at all. And 29 workstations are managed remotely, which means macOS updates land when the office can absorb them, never in the middle of a render.
The server and the network are sized for the real volume of the models, not for the average. The workstations are held to the same standard — one slow link is enough to cancel out the rest.
Fourteen years. The practice works in BIM on shared files, and the fleet has not grown by accident: 29 managed workstations is a figure that can be checked licence by licence, not an estimate.
Fourteen years on, the practice has never changed provider. The infrastructure has been replaced; the relationship has not.
