OGGO/Case studies/TWKS

The IT of a creative studio, in Geneva.

TWKS is a creative studio. Macs, an Adobe suite that never stops moving, and projects that don't pause for an update. OGGO looks after the fleet.

Twenty minutes is enough to tell what is holding and what is about to give.

The case
01

What wasn't working

A creative studio lives on software that updates itself, and that occasionally breaks a project in progress. The problem is not updating: it is choosing when.

And a studio archives as much as it produces. Finished projects don't get thrown away: they come back a year later, when the client asks for a variation. So you need two lots of storage doing two different jobs — the one you work on, and the one you keep.

02

What we put in place

Two lots of storage, backed up separately: 12 TB for the production server, 8 TB for the archive server. The first carries work in progress, the second what has been delivered, and both are replicated to our own data centre in Switzerland. 15 workstations are managed remotely, with antivirus deployed from the same console — macOS updates are held back and applied when the studio decides.

Updates are driven from one place, and land when the studio can take them — not when the vendor pushes them.

03

What holds today

Eleven years, since 2015. The studio produces on Adobe, in editing and in 3D, and its 8 TB archive can be browsed without pulling a drive out of a drawer.

The studio works on versions it controls, and nobody loses a day to a version surprise.

A school, a studio, an office — the method doesn't change.

We look at the setup before proposing anything at all. That holds for a classroom just as much as for a design server.
