In watchmaking, an image is judged on the detail of the dial. The files are enormous and pass from hand to hand. One slow link does not slow down one person: it slows down the whole retouching chain.
And the chain leaves the building. A watch image travels between the studio, the retoucher and the brand — often three places. The transfer is the moment the file is exposed.
Storage lives on eight servers across two sites: on each, a main machine and its high-availability standby, plus the servers that hold the backups — local, and mirrored from one site to the other. Production files stay reachable from every workstation, without a local copy. Exchanges with the outside go through an encrypted transfer server, set up in 2016, and a firewall filters what comes in. Support is billed against a block of hours: the studio picks up the phone without wondering whether the call is included.
Workstation, network and storage are sized together, not separately. It is the only way the flow holds when several retouchers are working on the same series.
Twelve years, since 2014. The transfer certificate set up in 2016 is still in service — ten years of renewals without a break.
